For the first time in the history of modern sailmaking a completely symmetrical sail has been made, enabled by the new integrated batten system and EPEX technology. The integrated batten system is inserted between the yarns of the sail, which is different to the conventional method where pockets are sewn onto one side of the sail. The integrated batten system and EPEX technology make sails, stronger and lighter, but most important: 100% identical on both tacks! Allowing same wind flow, shape and twist behaviour on both tacks.
Our designers create the shape of the sail as well as make the final layout. This computer model is transferred directly to the EPEX production plant, ensuring that the finished EPEX membrane will be completely identical with the design required. This is a global first. EPEX sail membranes are held in position over the whole surface during the entire process by means of vacuum. In this way a 100% homogeneous sail-laminate is produced. The result is a high performance membrane with previously unknown characteristics – EPEX.
Since the introduction of EPEX Technology five years ago, a few thousand of our sails are used on yachts around the world.
None of them ever showed signs of delamination!
This is obtained by optimization of the production processes and our severe quality control.
Our sails are built in Aabenraa, Denmark. Producing the membrane ourselves allow us full control of quality and performance of our products. All Elvstrøm sails are produced, controlled and inspected by our specialists. No other sailmaker can say that.
Jesper Bank is one of Denmark’s most successful athletes with a sailing career spanning from dinghies to superyachts. A multi-Olympian, Jesper has claimed two Gold Medals and one Bronze Medal during his Olympic career. All three Olympic Medals were won in the Soling Class at the 1988, 1992 and 2000 Olympic Games.
Complimenting his Olympic career, Jesper has also won six further World and three European Championship titles in the Soling, Dragon and H-Boat classes. In 1999 he won the coveted ISAF World Match Racing Championship, and in 2002 skippered the Scandinavian America’s Cup syndicate Victory Challenge in the 2002 Louis Vuitton Cup. Later in 2005-2007, he again skippered the German America’s Cup challenge in Valencia. 2008 included in Sports Hall of Fame.
A passionate sailor, Jesper is also a dedicated sailing coach and businessman. His involvement with Elvstrøm Sails started in 1992-2001 as a Board Director of the company and as head of sales & design. In November 2008, Jesper assumed the role of partner and Commercial Director of Elvstrøm Sails and is now sharing his time between the company’s headquarters in Aabenraa, Denmark and the subsidiary company, Elvstrøm Superyacht in Mallorca. Jesper remains a regular competitor on the professional and superyacht sailing scene.

Together with Dimension Polyant Elvstrøm Sails has developed a membrane with unprecedented properties. By adding a specific substance, a reflective surface is achieved. As a result, UV radiation is almost completely reflected and thereby protecting the underlying yarns. The surface is specially coated, so the absorption of water is eliminated. And it has got a stunning look!
E3 reflects about 90% of the harmful UV-Radiation, so they do not even reach the yarns within.
2. No water absoption:
The surface of E3 foils is extremley smooth, so water-drops hardly stick to the sail. This reduces the carried weight.
For the first time in the history of modern sailmaking a completely symmetrical sail has been built. Our latest generation of EPEX -sails are absolutely symmetric, made possible by the new integrated batten system and EPEX technologies. Unlike on conventional sails, where the batten pockets are placed on one side of the sail, the integrated battens are placed right in the middle of the membrane and are covered by fibres on both sides. This makes the sails stronger, lighter, and most importantly 100% symmetrical, with equal flow properties, profile, and twist behaviour on both tacks.
Elvstrøm Sails has more than 25 years experience in producing membrane sails - more than any other sailmaker. The entire knowledge has been used in the epic invention of EPEX - probably the best membrane in the world. Proven after the production of thousands of sails without a single case of delamination.
The loft itself has an unbeaten 60 year history of success and craftsmanship. A staff of almost 100 dedicated people is responsible for the exceptional quality of all Elvstrøm Sails – each one a result of state of the art technology and a passion for sailing.
A major advantage of EPEX technology is that the sail engineers feed their design directly into the production machinery. It is almost like printing in three dimension. The foils lay down flat under high pressure until they are cured and stabile. When they come off the table there is actually zero difference to the original design.
Despite using state-of-the-art software, at Elvstrøm Sails we give every sail a final quality check, using modern methods like microscopic cameras. In doing this we can make sure that the lamination process is completely satisfactory and meets our strict quality standards.
Elvstrøm Superyacht’s loft, located in Son Bugadellas, is ideally located to meet the service needs of any yacht based and visiting Mallorca. The loft is situated only 10 mins away from the main marinas in Palma.
